Volunteering

Unfortunately, due to the outbreak of COVID19, we have decided to suspend volunteer inductions for the time being, until we have re-evaluated what volunteering will look like going forward here at Alfalfa House. Please stay connected with us online for updates and thank you for your interest in helping us at the co-op! There will definitely be opportunities to help in the future. If you would like to express interest in helping out, please feel free to email [email protected] and tell us a bit about your skill-set.

Alfalfa House has a small number of paid staff and relies considerably on the help of our fantastic volunteer network in order to run smoothly. To volunteer with AH, you must be a member. We are always looking for volunteers to help out with a range of tasks including general refilling of produce & groceries in store, cleaning, gardening, recycling, administration, social media & content production, handy services such as a plumbing, electrical, carpentry, amongst other things. Volunteers are kept up to date with the needs of the store on weekly basis.

Volunteer discount

Volunteering two hours of your time earns members a 20% discount off the marked price of all goods (to be used in a single shop). If you are a permanent volunteer contributing eight hours or more per month, you will receive a 20% discount every time you shop with us.

Volunteer inductions

Before being able to volunteer, you must attend a 1 – 1.5 hour induction at Alfalfa House. The induction includes a guided tour of the shop and introduction to Alfalfa House policies & the volunteer code of conduct. Inductions are usually scheduled for the 2nd and last Saturday of each month and 1 Thursday evening throughout the month.

Express your interest in attending an induction by completing the form below. On the day, ensure you are wearing closed in shoes.

Volunteer positions

We encourage all our volunteers to commit to a regular 2 hour per a week time slot if possible. Consistency is important as we rely on our volunteers for the daily running of the co-op. We do understand that this may not be possible for everyone – if this is the case for you, we also have adhoc shifts that do become available which you can apply for via our rostering system as they come up.

Regular Volunteer Shifts

Shifts in the shop are generally divided up into the following categories:

Produce shift – mornings before we open, helping with produce deliveries (Mon/Weds/Fri)

Opening shift – starting just before we open the store to help shop staff get the store ready for doors open

Groceries shift – helping to unpack and put away deliveries received

Shop shift – 11am – 1pm and 3pm – 5pm (weekdays) 12pm – 2pm and 2pm – 4pm (weekends)

Closing shift – 6pm – 7:15pm (weekdays) 5pm – 6:15pm (weekends)
