Volunteering allows you to give back to the community, as well as earning a discount on your shop!

To become a volunteer, you must be a member. While Alfalfa House has a number of paid staff, we rely on considerable support from our network of committed member volunteers.

Tasks within the shop include general refilling of produce in the store, assisting with the fruit and vegetable orders, cleaning, gardening and helping customers. We also require a range of specialist skills for our working groups and other roles. See the volunteers position list below for current requirements.

Volunteer discount

Volunteering two hours of your time earns members a 25% discount off the marked price of all goods (to be used in a single shop). If you are a regular volunteer contributing eight hours or more per month, you will shop with a 25% discount.

Volunteer inductions

Before being able to volunteer, you must attend an induction lasting 1 hour at Alfalfa House. The induction includes a guided tour of the shop and introduction to the policies and procedures and volunteer code of conduct.

Inductions are held every Saturday at 10.30am, and on the first Thursday of every month at 6.30pm. No booking is required for our inductions, but please ensure you wear enclosed shoes to the induction.

Volunteer positions

Our volunteer roster is displayed on a whiteboard in the office of the co-op. We update the roster daily with our priority shifts, volunteer leave and available weekly positions.

We encourage all volunteers to commit to a 2 hour per a week time shot. Regularity is important as we rely on our volunteers for the daily running of the co-op. However, we understand that this may not be possible for everyone – if this is the case for you, please get in touch with us to discuss.
